The Cook County Clerk’s Office has released a comprehensive Post-Election Report for the March 19, 2024, Presidential Primary Election that provides an in-depth look at voting totals, election year trends, and results for individual races up and down the ballot.

A top takeaway from this election was the modest voter turnout, which dipped to a record low for a Presidential Primary. With nearly 18 percent voter turnout in the March 19 Election, this contest ranked as the lowest turnout for a Presidential Primary in more than 30 years. The circumstances of this particular election contributed to this dynamic, as both candidates running for president were largely unopposed.

While turnout was down, the number of registered voters in suburban Cook County continues to trend upward. The 2024 Presidential Primary had a record number of registered voters in a Presidential Primary with 1,600,364, up more than 30,000 from the 2020 primary contest.

The data also shows that more voters are opting to vote by mail, in favor of the more traditional Pre-Election voting methods such as Early Voting and Grace Period Registration and Voting. Mail Voting set a record for a primary election, with a 25 percent increase in mail ballots compared to four years ago.
